Michael Carrick hopes Manchester United can avoid repeat of Premier League agony

Michael Carrick says Manchester United will be keeping their foot on the gas during their Premier League title bid after suffering final day agony in 2011/12.

United saw the Premier League crown snatched from their grasp in dramatic fashion last season, with Manchester City stealing it away with virtually the last kick of the campaign.
Only goal difference separated Manchester's arch-rivals in the final reckoning, and it looks like being another tight chase this time around.
United are aware of the need to avoid a repeat of last season's heartache and are determined to build on the lead they have been able to open up at the top of the table.
Carrick told The Sun: "We're in a good position but if we don't keep doing the right things we know what can happen.
"It's not a case of being more determined this time. We would be hungry to win the league regardless of what happened last year.
"We were hurting in the summer. It wasn't a nice thing that we went through on the last day. But it's gone now, we've got to focus on what is ahead of us.
"We know City are not going to go away but there are so many games left that if you spend too much time thinking about who is getting what result, it can drive you mad. We just have to keep winning matches."

QPR striker Djibril Cisse joins Al Gharafa on loan until the end of the season

Queens Park Rangers striker Djibril Cisse has joined Al Gharafa on loan until the end of the Premier League season.

Rangers confirmed Cisse's move to the Qatar club on their official website on Sunday morning.
The 31 year-old had been expected to leave west London this month as Harry Redknapp takes his first opportunity to reshape his squad since taking over as manager in November.
Cisse scored 10 goals for Rangers following his £4m transfer from Lazio one year ago and helped them narrowly beat the drop last season.
But the former Liverpool player has now been deemed surplus to requirements in the first-team frame at Loftus Road.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Rs front-man Djibril Cisse has put pen to paper on a loan deal with Al Gharafa.
"The 31 year-old will remain with the Qatari-based club - who are managed by former Portsmouth boss Alain Perrin - until the end of the season.
"Cisse has made 21 appearances in all competitions this campaign, scoring four goals."

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are still a couple of players short

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are still a couple of 'big players' short of being challengers for top honours.

The Reds are hoping to be in a position to compete for the Premier League title and UEFA Champions League crown in the not too distant future, but are wary of splashing the cash in pursuit of such prizes.
Considered additions are the order of the day at Anfield, with January acquisition Daniel Sturridge another to have been drafted in with the present and future in mind.
Potential will only get you so ar, though, and Gerrard has reiterated his belief that experienced players of the highest calibre are required if Liverpool are to re-join English football's elite.
Gerrard told the Sunday Mirror: "In general, I like the direction the club is going in, but the harsh reality is that we still need two or three big players who can help.
"We were short before the last deadline and I think we struggled to find consistency because of that."

Harry Redknapp wants QPR to move quickly to land Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila

Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp has urged the Premier League strugglers to move quickly to secure the services of Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila.

Redknapp is keen to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window and has already seen Loic Remy added to his ranks in an £8million move from Marseille.
Speaking on Tuesday night, the Loftus Road boss said he hoped the arrival of M'Vila would be wrapped up in the coming days, but the move is yet to be finalised.
And now the former Tottenham boss has admitted that while discussions are on-going between all parties, there is a concern that rival bidders could hijack their swoop, with Everton and Tottenham also reported to be interested in the 22-year-old France international.
Redknapp told reporters after Saturday's 1-1 draw with West Ham, when Remy opened his account for the Rs: "We are working on it, that's all I can say.
"But you have to move quickly. The longer it goes on, the more people see his name in the papers."

Wales coach John Hartson thinks Aaron Ramsey should be looking to leave Arsenal on loan

Wales coach John Hartson feels Aaron Ramsey may benefit from a loan move away from Arsenal and regular first team football.

Ramsey is a key figure for his country and Hartson, along with national boss Chris Coleman, have high hopes for him heading forward.
They are, however, aware that the 22-year-old needs to be playing games if he is to produce his best on the international stage.
Taking that into account, Hartson has called on Ramsey to consider looking elsewhere during the winter window for an opportunity in which to get minutes under his belt and remind Arsenal of the qualities he brings to their squad.
Hartson said: "I just think Aaron needs that run of games.
"Maybe if he did go out on loan he'd get that, because he doesn't seem to start many games at Arsenal now and when he does start he's brought off and he doesn't look happy.
"Arsene Wenger knows he's a top-drawer player, because he wouldn't have given him a new deal otherwise.
"With Arsenal you look at their midfield. In Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, they've got some really, really gifted players.
"So it's up to Aaron to put in the performances when he plays and on the training ground."

Schalke 04 reject offer from Tottenham to sign Lewis Holtby during the January transfer window

Schalke 04 have rejected an offer from Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Lewis Holtby before the end of the January transfer window, it has been confirmed.

Holtby is set to join Spurs when his contract expires in June, but with Brazilian midfielder Sandro out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, the north London side approached Schalke in a bid to sign him now.
Manager of the Bundesliga outfit, Horst Heldt, confirmed they had rejected the offer, saying: "Tottenham have made an offer, which was not acceptable, therefore it was rejected.
"The transfer window is still open and Lewis has not become any cheaper."
The Germany Under-21 captain produced another impressive performance for Heldt's side on Friday when he created two goals and scored the decisive fifth in Schalke's thrilling 5-4 home win over Hanover 96.
The 22-year-old later confirmed any potential move is out of his hands, and his eyes are firmly fixed on his future with Schalke.
"I am not going to just p*** off without busting my a*** for the team," Holtby said.
"I will give my all for Schalke until the last second. Everything else must be decided by the clubs."

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker calls for character in clash with Chelsea

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has challenged the Gunners to prove they can fight their way back into the top four of the Premier League with victory at Chelsea.

Arsenal head to Stamford Bridge boosted by their midweek FA Cup third-round replay win over Swansea, a much-needed lift after being branded "timid" by manager Arsene Wenger in last weekend's 2-0 home defeat by champions Manchester City.
A repeat of last season's thrilling 5-3 win in west London would move Arsenal back to within striking distance of the top four.
Mertesacker said: "Busy weeks are coming and the most important thing is to build up confidence after the defeat against Manchester City.
"We showed great confidence [against Swansea] right from the start. Last season, we showed we can win at Chelsea.
"When we put our opponents under pressure we are always dangerous, that must be our target at Chelsea as well. Let's show our character and our ability."
Mertesacker added: "If you want to be in the top four, you have to compete with Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, those teams are in this zone, so we need to win against those four as much as we can.
"That is a good chance to show how good we are."
Theo Walcott finally penned a contract extension on Friday to end speculation about his future and Mertesacker is in no doubt Arsenal have the perfect blend to secure a successful end to the campaign.
"We have a good squad, good young players and experienced players, a good balance, but the most important thing is to stick together," the 28-year-old German international said.
"We have young players who are vital at the moment for the team."

Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez ready to hand Fernando Torres a rest

Chelsea's interim manager Rafa Benitez is ready to take Fernando Torres out of the firing line and offer him a rest.

Torres' struggles at Stamford Bridge since completing a record-breaking £50million move are well-documented, with the Spaniard having struggled for form throughout his stay in the capital.
It was hoped that a spell under Benitez, who brought the best out of him during their time together at Liverpool, would bring about a reversal in fortune.
Unfortunately, no dramatic improvement has materialised and Benitez has now hinted that he is ready to give Torres a break - with Demba Ba having been added to the Chelsea ranks to help shoulder the attacking workload.
Ahead of Sunday's derby date with Arsenal, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 HD, Benitez said: "Torres is a Chelsea player and the fans have to understand that he will always do his best.
"It is really important for everyone to understand the way to win is to win together.
"Hopefully we can change that now if Torres can rest. He will be fresher and fitter and play at the level we know he can play."

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he tried to take Gareth Bale to Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he made a bid to take Gareth Bale to Manchester United prior to the Welshman signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

After bursting onto the scene as a teenager at Southampton, Bale attracted plenty of interest from Premier League heavyweights.
Ferguson admits United were among those looking to do a deal, but saw an approach knocked back by Southampton.
Shortly after, Bale was on his way to Spurs and, now 23 years of age, he has matured into one of the most dangerous and highly-rated wingers in European football.
Ahead of United's trip to White Hart Lane on Sunday, Ferguson said: "We tried to buy him from Southampton and they turned us down.
"It was not the boy who turned us down, it was Southampton, then a few weeks later he signed for Tottenham.
"It happens. You don't get them all. As I said before, we would have loved to have got (Paul) Gascoigne but we didn't - but we did get Paul Ince and he was a great player for us. These things happen."
On a weekend clash with fourth-placed Spurs, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 HD, Ferguson added: "It's an important game because this is a period of the season that if we can keep our momentum going, we have got home games against Everton and Southampton in the next few weeks.
"These are really big opportunities for us."

Carlos Tevez plans to head back to Argentina when Manchester City contract expires

Carlos Tevez has revealed that he intends to head back to Argentina in 2014, rather than pen a new contract at Manchester City.

City had been hoping that Tevez would agree to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium, with a troubled past put to one side during contract negotiations.
Tevez has, however, snubbed the offer of a new two-year contract.
He will see out his current deal, which has 18 months left to run, but admits that he will then look to head home and link up with Boca Juniors for a second time.
Tevez said: "I've got a year left on my contract at Manchester Cityand they want me to sign for two more seasons.
"I would prefer to return home, but it is very difficult because City won't let me leave for nothing.
"I will stay in Europe for another two years and then go back.
"Boca's president always says the door is open for me to re-join them and I am dying to pull on their shirt once more. I want to end my career with them. It is my dream and the dream of my family as well.
"But I am under contract and have to be here in England."

Arsene Wenger calls on Arsenal to match opponents for aggression

Arsene Wenger has called on his players to rediscover the aggression which characterised his early Arsenal sides.

The double-winning teams of 1998 and 2002 were renowned for a competitive edge to go with their technical football.
And while Wenger is not advocating a return to the kind of disciplinary problems now long in the past, the Gunners boss wants his current team to show the stomach for a physical battle.
He said: "Maybe we have to go back a little bit, not less technical but a bit more physical and aggressive.
"I think that when referees see Arsenal on the sheet, they say 'oh fantastic'.
"This side are physical players, but we have to restructure the balance of the team a little bit.
"The players have the character to do it. The likes of Jack Wilshere are technical players, but they are also physical players."

Juventus confident of signing Fernando Llorente from Athletic Bilbao

Juventus are in "advanced talks" with Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente.

The Spain international is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with several Premier League clubs.
But Italian champions Juve are confident of landing Llorente - possibly even before the end of the month.
Chief executive Beppe Marotta said: "I do not deny that with Llorente and his entourage we are very advanced in our talks.
"I am very optimistic although we may have to wait until 1 July."
Marotta also played down suggestions the club were ready to sell Arturo Vidal and denied the club had recieved a bid amid reported interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
"We have received requests for our players, but we are generally more accustomed to buying than selling," he said.
"It's no real surprise that Bayern want him, but there are no offers."

West Bromwich Albion come from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa

West Brom came from 2-0 down to snatch a point as Aston Villa climbed out of the relegation places in an entertaining 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns.

With earlier results going against them, Villa found themselves second from bottom of the Premier League at kick off, and reacted swiftly, racing into a two goal lead before half time through Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor.
But the second half belonged to West Brom as they created a host of chances to breach the nervy Villa defence, and once Chris Brunt had halved the arrears, it was just a matter of time before the equaliser came, with Peter Odemwingie obliging with just seven minutes remaining.
It was little more than West Brom deserved, despite emerging second best from a first half that will give all at Villa Park hope of a better second half to the season.
Paul Lambert's youngsters raced from the blocks showing little fear, in spite of the predicament they found themselves in at kick off, languishing 19th in the table after the afternoon's games.
Charles N'Zogbia, Agbonlahor and Benteke provided a formidable attacking triangle, and West Brom had no answer to their movement that was relentless down both channels.
And it was little surprise that the opening was not long in arriving. A piece of individual brilliance from the Belgian Benteke saw him lose his marker with a drop of the shoulder and turn to power a right-footed shot into the far corner.
The pressure continued, and the home crowd were becoming increasingly frustrated by their side's lack of shooting composure. Graham Dorrans and Brunt were both wayward with efforts on Brad Guzan's goal, whilst Romelu Lukaku struggled to get the better of the returning Ron Vlaar.
So the second goal was richly deserved and predictably the opening was created by N'Zogbia. His drive down the right and pin-point ball inside to Agbonlahor saw the forward finish with aplomb to silence the home crowd still further.
Half time came at a bad time for Villa, and gave Steve Clarke the chance to regroup his troops, and West Brom did just that.
A far more positive West Brom outfit emerged for the second period, and immediately set about reducing the arrears.
Chris Brunt took just over four minutes to find his shooting boots, side-footing in from the edge of the box to start the nerves jangling in the Villa camp.
And after several missed chances, not least by Odemwingie, the Nigerian international finally got his reward, and broke Villa hearts, hooking in from a corner after Gareth McAuley had knocked the ball down.

Barca rocked by Sociedad

Real Sociedad hit back from two goals down to end Barcelona's unbeaten Primera Division record in stunning fashion with a 3-2 win at the Anoeta.

All looked to be going to plan for Tito Vilanova's visitors when Lionel Messi and Pedro Rodriguez put them two goals up within 25 minutes.
But Gonzalo Castro's brilliant strike gave Sociedad hope before half-time and then, after Barca had lost centre-back Gerard Pique to a red card, Castro's curling effort was deflected into his own net by Barca substitute Javier Mascherano.
That sent the home fans wild, but it got even better in stoppage time when Imanol Agirretxe poked Carlos Martinez's cross from the right past Victor Valdes.
There was no sign in the early stages of the drama that was to unfold as the Catalan giants, who had headed to San Sebastian having dropped only two points in La Liga all term, started brightly.
Messi passed up a straightforward opportunity after five minutes but swiftly made amends, latching onto Andres Iniesta's pass and cutting in to slot a left-footed shot low past Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from the edge of the penalty area.
It was the prolific Argentina forward's first goal in four attempts at the Anoeta, and meant he equalled a club record in scoring in 10 straight league games.
Pedro saw a brilliant curling effort hit the post after 14 minutes before being rewarded for his industry with a neat second goal. After a spell of solid possession, Xavi dinked the ball over the top for Dani Alves, who crossed for the Spain forward to prod home from close range.

Martinez thought he had pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 34th minute but was denied by the offside flag.
Messi almost made it 3-0 six minutes before the interval but again the woodwork came to the Basque club's rescue. Xavi was again the provider with the ball over the top and, with the out-rushing Bravo committed, Messi got there first and lofted a left-footed chip goalwards only to see it strike the right post and trickle agonisingly along the line before being cleared.
Moments later Castro halved the deficit for Sociedad. He was afforded too much space by Dani Alves on the left and, after being picked out by Carlos Vela, drilled a powerful low shot across Valdes.
Barca - 11 points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid - immediately pushed forward once more looking to restore their two-goal cushion, their best attempt before half-time resulting in Messi's stinging volley being parried by Bravo for a corner in the 44th minute.
Ninth-placed Sociedad came out firing at the start of the second half, though, and had their visitors very much on the back foot.
Pique, having been needlessly booked before the break for not retreating 10 yards at a set-play, paid the price 11 minutes after the restart when he was shown a second yellow card for a trip on Vela.
Iniesta soon followed Pique into the referee's notebook when he clipped Martinez as he made another surging run towards goal.
The 10 men were looking rattled, Jordi Alba getting in the way of Antoine Griezmann's shot and then Valdes - who earlier this week announced he would not be renewing his contract when it expires in June 2014 - nervously spilling Castro's blast for a corner on the hour.
Soon after, the hosts were level. Mascherano, who had replaced Cesc Fabregas following Pique's dismissal, deflected Castro's right-footed effort and, although Valdes got a hand to it, he was unable to keep it out.
Barca's frustrations threatened to boil over 10 minutes from the end as Alba squared up to Sociedad substitute Diego Ifran.
Iniesta was then fortunate not to become the second visiting player sent off when he brought down Vela, the referee showing leniency following his earlier caution.
However, it did get worse for the leaders as the game entered stoppage time when Agirretxe tapped the winner past a helpless Valdes.

Manchester City's David Silva takes plaudits as David Platt reflects on Fulham victory

David Platt was pleased to see David Silva add goals to his recent good performances as Manchester City beat Fulham.

The Spaniard went into the game with just one goal this season but trebled his tally with both in a 2-0 win.
Roberto Mancini's assistant said: "Last year he had a few more goals under his belt but we know how important he is whether he is scoring goals or not.
"I think his performances have been right up there. I think it would be harsh to say it has been lacking. He is in the team for all sorts of different reasons, not just his goalscoring ability.
City put pressure back on United
"I think his performances of late have deserved goals. I am pleased he got the two and he should have had a third."
City - temporarily, at least - moved to within four points of leaders Manchester United, and Platt said: "We have got 15 games left. Both teams will drop points, I am sure.
"We have got to make sure we keep getting victories so if United slip up we are in a position to take advantage of that."

Fulham manager Martin Jol on his side's 2-0 defeat at Manchester City

Fulham manager Martin Jol was satisfied with his side's application in the 2-0 defeat at champions Manchester City.

The Cottagers conceded in just the second minute to David Silva, who then made the points safe in the second period to cap a masterful display.

Jol said afterwards: "You are fearful - we were very concerned because if you concede a goal after one-and-a-half minutes, you really fear for a bad game, a bad afternoon.
"But it wasn't, we did okay. If you consider they scored the second goal in the 69th minute, we could have hurt them today.
"In the first half they had a shot from (Edin) Dzeko over the bar and a shot from (Carlos) Tevez but that was probably it. I felt we could have done a bit more and scored the equaliser.
"But if you have got Silva - he has extra quality, probably the best player in the Premier League. He was fantastic but overall I felt we did okay."
On the continuing stand-off with left-back John Arne Riise, who was once again omitted from the matchday squad, the Dutchman added: "John Arne Riise is a fantastic boy - he will never come up with that sort of rubbish, he didn't want to travel.
"You have got (Matthew) Briggs, who is younger and who can go on the bench. John Arne Riise stayed at Motspur Park to do an extra session. I promised him if he was not starting it is probably better if you don't go with us.
"I wasn't happy after the Liverpool game, when (Stewart) Downing scored his first goal since joining Liverpool - John was playing against him, and there was another goal.
"I am trying to do something, maybe to freshen things up or alert John to do more or to do better. He is an experienced player, so if he is not playing he is not happy.
"He wants to play but I have got three left-backs now. Kieran (Richardson) probably did the best job of the three."

Brendan Rodgers hails Suarez and Sturridge partnership as Liverpool thrash Norwich

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers enjoyed the burgeoning partnership between Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge as his side thrashed Norwich 5-0 at Anfield.

Suarez took his tally to 20 for the season with the Reds' second, while Sturridge, a £12m signing from Chelsea earlier this month, became the first Liverpool player since Ray Kennedy in 1974 to score in his first three matches.
"I couldn't have asked for more. The players were brilliant in their application and their game and it was a great performance," said Rodgers.
"They (Suarez and Sturridge) linked very well, obviously both got on the scoresheet, which was great.
"Luis has done what he has done for us all season, given us 100 per cent every game, and he combined well with Daniel up front.
"I think it gives the opponent someone else to worry about. Suarez has been incredible for us but you now have a recognised goalscorer up beside him.
"Daniel has pace and power but he is also clever and that was important as Norwich are tough to break down.
Rodgers hails 'outstanding' performance
"The second goal was a wonderful demonstration of how good players can link together.
"I thought defensively we were also very intense and aggressive in getting the ball back. It was a terrific performance."
"Pepe was injured and Brad Jones came in and kept a clean sheet," he added.
"He had a thigh problem before the game last week and he played and the assessment afterwards was it had got worse - plus he had broken his nose.
"He had an operation to fix the nose yesterday so we will see how he is by next week and review it from there."

Primera Liga round-up: Barcelona suffer shock first defeat

Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down 3-2 to Real Sociedad in the Primera Liga.

Barca had previously dropped just two points all season and looked set to extend their remarkable record to 19 wins out of 20 as they opened up a two-goal lead, only to be stunned by a Sociedad fightback.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring when he latched onto Andres Iniesta's pass and cut in to slot a left-footed shot low past Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from the edge of the penalty area.
Pedro added a second on 25 minutes with a finish from close range after Xavi dinked the ball over the top for Dani Alves to cross.
However, Gonzalo Castro halved Sociedad's deficit before the interval with a brilliant strike and Barca were reduced to ten men in the 56th minute as Gerard Pique was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Castro's curling effort was then deflected into his own net by Barca substitute Javier Mascherano to make it 2-2, and Imanol Agirretxe poked Carlos Martinez's cross from the right past Victor Valdes in the 90th minute to send the home fans wild and Barca in shock.
In the first game of the day, Granada secured only their second home win of the season as they beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0.
The visitors came into the game on the back of four consecutive wins that had propelled them into the European places, but were made to pay for some defensive mistakes.
A Jordi Amat own goal gave Granada the lead on 25 minutes as he inadvertently turned Allan Nyom's cross beyond goalkeeper Ruben.
Recio secured victory ten minutes from time with a fine arrowed drive from Carlos Aranda's cut-back, boosting Granada's hopes of beating the drop.

Martin O'Neill praises striker Steven Fletcher as his brace seals Sunderland victory over Wigan

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill hailed Steven Fletcher following his brace in Saturday's 3-2 win over Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Fletcher's two goals before half-time saw Sunderland recover from a 1-0 deficit and O'Neill was impressed with the striker's performance.
"Fletcher was fantastic," he said.
"It was not just his goals but also his whole centre forward play. We took great heart from his performance."
Wigan piled forward after Angelo Henriquez pulled a goal back with 11 minutes to go, but Mauro Boselli wasted their best chance when he headed over, leaving the hosts to lick their wounds and O'Neill to praise a backs-to-the-wall effort from his defenders.
"We've had to show a lot of fight and determination," said O'Neill, whose side have moved comfortably into mid-table after five wins from their last eight games.
"Wigan threw a lot at us and were never out of it.
"It was all hands to the pump at the end and I am delighted with the result."

Eduardo Vargas' loan move to Gremio from Napoli has been confirmed

Gremio have announced that they have completed the signing of Eduardo Vargas from Napoli.

Sao Paulo had shown late interest in the winger, who had also been linked with Arsenal, but Gremio have now announced the deal on their official site.
The signing is reported to be a 12-month loan deal at a cost of £1.6million.
"Eduardo Vargas will wear the blue, white and black of Gremio," the site announced.
"Vargas will leave Italy and will arrive at Porto Alegre tomorrow.
"After being welcomed at the airport by the supporters, he will officially be unveiled at the Olympic Stadium."

Celtic hand new contracts to young duo Bahrudin Atajic and Darnell Fisher

Celtic have given new contracts to youngsters Bahrudin Atajic and Darnell Fisher.

Both youngsters were due to be out of contract at the end of the season but have been rewarded for their impressive performances for the U20 and development squads.
Striker Atajic has contributed 11 league goals this season and scored with a sublime overhead kick during the Youth Cup campaign, while Fisher has proved a consistent performer at right-back.
Development coach Stevie Frail said: "They have been in good form this season and they deserve this.
"We have been impressed with them but the work gets even harder now.
"They are striving to get into the first team but they must continue to train hard and hopefully their development will continue as it has done in the last few months."

Reading set to offer Zambia defender Stopilla Sunzu deal after impressing on trial

Reading are preparing an offer for Zambia international defender Stopilla Sunzu after impressing on trial.

The TP Mazembe player has spent the last week training with Reading in the hope of winning a move to the Madejski Stadium.
The 23-year-old has impressed during his stint at Reading and Royals boss Brian McDermott is ready to push through a deal for the centre-half.
Sunzu has ended his trial at the club to link up with his Zambiateam-mates for the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa where they kick off their campaign against Ethiopia on Monday.
McDermott has been busy in the transfer market having brought in Stephen Kelly, Hope Akpan and Daniel Carrico, and it looks like Sunzu will be the next new face in at the club.

Swansea quiet on Kenwyne Jones links but confirm bids for Danny Graham

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup refused to be drawn on his reported interest in signing Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones, but confirmed there have been bids for Danny Graham.

Jones is likely to start for the Potters when they face Laudrup's side in the Premier League on Saturday, with reports having linked him to a £3million move to the Liberty Stadium.
Swansea have received a number of offers for the in-demand Graham and Jones would make for an ideal replacement up front.
But Laudrup said: "He (Jones) will probably play. Maybe if he can play with us it can be 12 against 10 but I don't think that will happen.
"Let's just say it is not the proper time to talk about a player when he is playing against us in around 24 hours time.
"Let's hope tomorrow he does not have too good a day as it is better for us."
On Graham, who has been linked with Sunderland and Norwich among others, he added: "Everywhere it is saying there have been some official bids, it is true, but apart from that I don't really have any comment as in the next four days we have two very important games.
"Saturday is a very important home game against Stoke in the league as after that we have two difficult away games against Sunderland and West Ham, and we all know about the game on Wednesday (against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup), so that is much more important.
"So my only comment is we have had some bids and I don't want to go into detail about what clubs they are."

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck hails team-mate Robin van Persie

Striker Danny Welbeck says he is relishing being in the same Manchester United squad as Robin van Persie even though the Dutchman may limit his first-team opportunities.

The two played together to good effect in last weekend's win over Liverpool, with Van Persie scoring and Welbeck producing a man-of-the-match performance.
With Wayne Rooney fit again following a knee injury, Welbeck may struggle to retain his place for Sunday's game at Tottenham but the 22-year-old is happy to learn from his more experienced colleague.
"He brings others into the game very well and holds the ball up as well. As you watch him more closely, you get to see how good he is. It is great to be playing in the same team as him and I do learn from him as well."
By the time United take to the field at White Hart Lane they will know the size of their lead over nearest rivals Manchester City, who face Fulham on Saturday, but Welbeck insists United are only focusing on their own results.
"We are not looking at anybody else," he added. "Every game now is important. The main thing is to get the three points no matter who is in the team.
"Once anyone gets their chance, they have to give 100%. We are together as a group. We are working for each other and looking out for each other."
"Robin is a world-class striker and has definitely added something to our team," said Welbeck. "It is not just his goalscoring, it is his all-round play.

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott puts pen to paper on new long-term contract

Theo Walcott has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal to finally end any speculation about his future.

The England forward's deal was due to expire at the end of the season with rival clubs queueing up to try and sign the 23-year-old on a free transfer.
Since arriving at the club from Southampton back in 2006, Walcott has become an international regular and scored 56 goals in 244 appearances, and his deal is reported to commit him to Arsenaluntil the summer of 2016.
Walcott said: "I am very happy to have signed a new contract here at Arsenal.
"Thanks to everyone for their continued support, especially the manager, everyone at the club and most importantly the fans.

"I have made it clear from the start that I wanted to stay at Arsenal so I am pleased we have agreed a deal that everyone is happy with. What's important now is for the team to realise its potential and win trophies."
Boss Arsene Wenger added: "We are all delighted that Theo has signed a new contract. He joined us as a 16-year-old and since then has developed very well to become an extremely important player for both Arsenal Football Club and England.
"Theo is a strong player and also a great person, and the combination of his ability and pace always make him such a valuable asset either from the flanks or down the middle.
"Theo's contract extension now gives us a strong nucleus of ambitious young players who have committed to the club and want to be successful with us as a group."

Rafael Benitez has denied unrest among the Chelsea fans was affecting his team

Rafael Benitez has denied unrest among the Stamford Bridge faithful was affecting his team's home performances.

Chelsea have chalked up six wins on the road since Benitez's arrival in November, but they have only managed one victory in six games at home, where the disquiet over the hiring of Benitez - and the axing of Roberto Di Matteo - shows no sign of abating.
"It was always tough, always difficult when I went to Stamford Bridge as Liverpool boss," said Benitez ahead of the weekend visit of Arsenal.
"We will try to make it the same. It was (like that) for Aston Villa. After that everyone was scared.
"The atmosphere doesn't affect the players. We are professionals and we concentrate on our job. If we win, I'm sure they'll be happy.
"It's a question of the tactics of other teams, if they're deep or not.
"Arsenal are a top team. They won't be 11 men behind the ball on the edge of the box waiting. It's a different kind of game.
"The only way to do your job properly is to carry on analysing the game, talking to people, and being up to date every day."
One man who could help lift the mood is captain John Terry who has not started a game since suffering knee ligament damage during November's clash with Liverpool.
As to whether he might start in Sunday's Sky Live derby, Benitez added: "He's been training with the team and has been fine. We will decide on Saturday after the training session."

Sir Alex Ferguson says overturning of Vincent Kompany's red card is 'very unusual'

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the overturning of Vincent Kompany's red card is 'very unusual' and the FA may have created a problem for themselves.

The Manchester City captain was dismissed by Mike Dean at Arsenal on Sunday for what he deemed to be a dangerous tackle.
Although the incident itself was borderline, most observers believed the FA would stand behind Dean and leave Kompany to serve a three-match ban, but the disciplinary panel had other ideas and cleared the City player.
While Ferguson is wary of adding to the debate, believing his comments will be deemed biased, the Scot does feel the FA have not done themselves any favours by failing to back match officials over incidents that do not appear to be clear-cut.
"Anything I say in that situation will be regarded as biased, so I am not going to bother with it," he said.
"But it is very unusual.
"It does open the door of course, but that is their (the FA's) problem."

Serie A side Fiorentina have signed Siena striker Marcelo Larrondo on loan

Fiorentina have signed Siena striker Marcelo Larrondo on loan until the end of the season, the Serie A club have confirmed.

The 24-year-old Argentinian had been restricted to just three league appearances this term and moves across Tuscany to bolster La Viola's attack, with a view to making the move permanent at the end of the season.
A statement on Viola Channel read: "Fiorentina can confirm acquiring the services of Marcelo Alejandro Paez Larrondo.
"Larrondo, born in Tunuyan on August 16, 1988, arrives on loan with an option to buy him from Siena. He will wear the number 18 shirt."
Larrondo joined Siena in 2009 and played a key role in helping the Bianconeri to promotion from Serie B in the 2010-11 season.

Nuri Sahin in line for his second Borussia Dortmund debut on Saturday

Nuri Sahin is in line for his second Borussia Dortmund debut in Saturday's clash with Werder Bremen after being included in Jurgen Klopp's squad for their first Bundesliga fixture of 2013.

Sahin joined Dortmund on loan from Real Madrid, just 18 months after leaving the club to move to this season on loan at Liverpool but rarely featured, which is why he may have to wait patiently for his chance.
"Physically, Nuri's in very good shape, but he hasn't played that much," said Klopp.
Sahin did appear for 45 minutes in a friendly match last weekend, but Sven Bender and Sebastian Kehl are still more likely to start Saturday's match at the Weser Stadion with Sahin on the bench.
Either way, Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf knows what to expect.
"It doesn't matter who they field in the midfield, they have such high quality in there," he said.
"We don't have to concern ourselves with the actual players' names. Sahin has already shown how strong he is and he fits in well in Dortmund with the quality he has got."
Schaaf has enough quality within his own side to celebrate a winning stat to 2013, although he does have to make do without forward Marko Arnautovic.
Niclas Fullkrug, a potential replacement of the Austrian is also ruled out due to injury, but Schaaf is nevertheless optimistic about his side's chances in the second half of the season.
"The wins in our training camp give us self-confidence and self-belief," he said.
"I hope that the impressions we have had from the preparation will be confirmed and we can get a good result.
"We just want to play the best second half to the season as possible."

Tony Mowbray felt Middlesbrough did not deserve to lose at Leicester

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray was disappointed to leave the King Power Stadium empty-handed after the 1-0 defeat to Leicester.

Boro's preparations were not helped by a two-hour journey from their hotel to the ground due to the adverse weather conditions.
Marvin Emnes had the chance to salvage a point for the visitors, but his penalty in added time was saved by Kasper Schmeichel to condemn Boro to a third straight defeat.
"We are very disappointed as I think we did enough not to lose the game," said Mowbray.
"We created enough chances to get something out of the game. We played against a good side who have been free scoring all season going forward.
"They hit the woodwork three times, but we had some really clear cut chances as well.
"We didn't stick them in the back of the net and goals change games. We have to be more clinical and it is a very frustrated dressing room.
"To have a penalty going into injury time and not score is very frustrating. But there a lot of positives, enough to know we can go on our travels and win.
"We have got nothing to fear and we go into all games knowing that we can win them. But we need to be more clinical."

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson celebrates tough win over Middlesbrough

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson heaped praise on his players after they leapt to second in the Championship with a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

David Nugent's accomplished finish in the 70th minute proved enough to bag all three points, although Kasper Schmeichelensured victory when he saved a penalty from Marvin Emnes in added time.
"It is a good feeling to be second in the table and I thought the players applied themselves really well," said Pearson.
"We had a sneaky feeling that Middlesbrough would play the way they did with two wide players and no central strikers.
"It caused us a few problems tactically, but in the second half we pushed the full-backs forward and took a few more chances. Bt I thought we coped well and throughout the game created the better chances.
"It was a good game all round and there were one or two tight decisions, and Kasper made a fine save at the end from the penalty.
"Because of the weather it has been a tough day for the fans travelling to the match and for a lot of people. But we are very pleased with the result, as it is games like these which can define seasons. We have put ourselves in a good spot."

Barnsley defender John Stones admits he is keen to play in the top-flight

Barnsley starlet John Stones admits he would love the chance to play in the Premier League.

The England Under-19 international defender has come through the youth tanks at Oakwell and a host of top-flight clubs are chasing him.
Now Stones admits he is flattered by the interest being shown in him - but also says he is happy progressing with Barnsley.
"I'd love to play in the Premier League one day, every player dreams about doing that," he told the Sheffield Star.
"The Premier League is regarded as the best league in the world, so it would be amazing if I got the chance to play there one day.
"I don't know what's going to happen, but if a Premier League club did come in for me then it would be a very big decision for me. I'm still very young and I'd have to consider a lot of things, but right now I want to stay at Barnsley. I've signed a deal until 2015 and I'm happy.
"It's very flattering that some Premier League clubs have shown an interest in me, but right now all I want to do is concentrate on playing for Barnsley.
"I've been a Barnsley player all my life and I'm just focusing on playing for the club at the moment.
"This season has gone so well for me and I've really enjoyed it. I really have just taken things one game at a time - and that's worked well for me."
New Barnsley boss David Flitcroft added: "He's a player we can't get off the training ground and out of the gym. He works so hard and deserves his opportunity this season He's gutsy, resilient and determined to be successful.
"He's got quality."

Championship: David Nugent's first-time strike sends Leicester second with 1-0 win

David Nugent's excellent first-time strike sent Leicester second in the Championship after a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough at The King Power Stadium.

Kasper Schmeichel was another hero for Leicester on the night. Leading through Nugent's 70th-minute strike, Foxes substitute Jamie Vardy untidily brought Boro captain Rhys Williams down in the area, but Schmeichel plunged to his left to superbly thwart Marvin Emnes.
The adverse weather conditions delayed Middlesbrough's arrival and the kick-off by 15 minutes, but Tony Mowbray's men begin brightly, with top scorer McDonald firing a snap-shot over in the seventh minute after George Friend's cross was partially cleared by City centre-back Michael Keane.
Chris Wood, looking to build on six goals in three Leicester appearances and a hat-trick last time out, collected a slack pass from Emmanuel Ledesma and tested Jason Steele in the Boro goal following Nugent's return pass.
Steele was a spectator in the 28th minute when Anthony Knockaert collected Wood's lay-off from Paul Konchesky's raking pass on the left hand side of the penalty area and unleashed a venomous left-footed shot which struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced down onto the far post and out to safety.
In the 37th minute McDonald was allowed room to drive goalward from 25 yards. Schmeichel pushed behind and thwarted Andre Bikey's header from the resulting corner.
Leicester ended the half the stronger, with Nugent twice drawing sharp stops from Steele and Keane rattling the bar when Wood stood up a chip into the six yard box.
They should have paid for their profligacy eight minutes into the second period as Ledesma's dinked finish dropped wide after a cute, flicked pass from Middlesbrough's Chelsea loanee Josh McEachran sent him clear.
The hosts responded by striking the woodwork for a third time, Wood planting a powerful header against the upright from Konchesky's centre.
Nugent did manage to beat Steele and his goalposts in the 63rd minute but was adjudged to be marginally offside when he stroked home Ritchie De Laet's pass.
There was no debate when the once-capped England striker clinically swept a half-volley into far corner after Wood dinked the ball into his path.
Substitutes Lloyd Dyer and Vardy might have added a degree of comfort to Leicester's evening, before the latter was left to thank Schmeichel for sparing his blushes.

Shrimps and Robins draw blanks

Morecambe and Cheltenham shared the spoils as an icy evening at the Globe Arena ended in a 0-0 draw.

In a game of few opportunities neither side could make the breakthrough needed to take the three points.
The visitors had the best of the chances and created the clearest opening of the game just after the restart when Shaun Harrad teed up Kaid Mohamed but the striker failed to find the target from six yards.
Morecambe's best effort came in the 52nd minute when Lewis Alessandra forced Scott Brown into an excellent save low to his left from a rare counter attack.
Cheltenham started the brighter with Harrad drilling a low shot wide in the second minute and Marlon Pack tested Barry Roche with a well struck free kick seven minutes later that was heading for the bottom left-hand corner.
The Shrimps hit back with Stewart Drummond showing a neat bit of skill to fire in a low volley from the edge of the box that forced Brown into an excellent save low to his right.
Cheltenham ended the half on top with Russell Penn seeing a shot from the edge of the box well parried by Roche before the Robins were denied a good penalty shout when Sam Deering went down under the attentions of Andy Fleming.

PSV Eindhoven return from winter break in dismal fashion with 3-1 home defeat

PSV Eindhoven ended their winter break in dismal fashion as they were upset 3-1 at home by lowly PEC Zwolle, finishing the match with 10 men.

Erik Pieters' return from nine months out with injury was cut short by a red card in the 67th minute, but by the time he departed following a poor challenge from behind on Fred Benson, all four goals had already been scored.
Benson got two of them, putting Zwolle ahead courtesy of some poor defending in the 25th minute and then, after Tim Matacz levelled three minutes before half-time, he put Zwolle back in front nine minutes into the second half after another defensive mix-up.
Wiljan Pluim added a third in the 63rd minute to give Zwolle a rare victory in Eindhoven, and the frustration got to Pieters moments later.
Reports in Holland after the match said Pieters had been taken to hospital after punching a window in anger and cutting his hand.
The result means FC Twente have the opportunity to move three points clear by beating RKC Waalwijk on Saturday, while Ajax or Feyenoord will move level with them in second place if there is a winner between the two at the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday.

Port Vale complete signing of Daniel Jones after Sheffield Wednesday departure

Port Vale have completed the signing of defender Daniel Jones after he left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent.

The 26-year-old reached agreement with Wednesday before agreeing to initially join Vale until June 30, but will have to wait for his debut after Saturday's home clash with Bradford was postponed.
"I've really enjoyed my time at Sheffield Wednesday. I haven't played as many games as I would I have liked and I'm ready for a new challenge," Jones told Wednesday's official website.
"Wednesday is a massive club and I hope the lads can turn it around this season and climb the table."
Jones, who can play in midfield or at left-back, began his career at Wolves and had two loan spells at Northampton before two similar stints at Oldham.
Further loan spells followed at Notts County and Bristol Rovers before he joined Wednesday on a free transfer in August 2010. He made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Owls.

West Brom defender Craig Dawson looks set to for a loan move to the Championship

A host of Championship clubs are looking to land West Bromwich Albion defender Craig Dawson

The highly-rated 22-year-old has yet to play a league game under Steve Clarke so far this season and a number of Premier League clubs have shown an interest as a result.
Swansea were one of those understood to be keen, West Brom have opted not to sell.
They are also unwilling to loan him to a team in their own division, but they are ready to let him get playing time in the Championship.
It is understood Wolves, Blackburn, Leeds, Bolton, Leicester,Barnsley, Burnley and Nottingham Forest are all keen on doing a deal for the England U21 international.

Sharps joins Brewers on loan

Sharps, 32, has played 27 times in all competitions this season for the Millers, but has found himself out of the side in recent weeks due to the form of Kari Arnason and Johnny Mullins.

"Burton have asked the question on a couple of occasions and added to the fact that Craig Morgan will return to action shortly, it made sense for me to sanction the loan move," said Millers boss Steve Evans.
Sharps, who began his career at Tranmere where he made almost 200 appearances during an eight-year period, joined Rotherham for his first permanent spell on a free transfer in August 2006.
He made a similar number of appearances in his first stint for the Millers before moving on to Shrewsbury for two seasons and returned to Rotherham last summer.

Championship: Bolton boss Dougie Freedman admits he had to let Jacob Butterfield go

Dougie Freedman did not extend Jacob Butterfield's loan spell with Bolton because he could not guarantee regular games to the Norwich midfielder.

The Wanderers boss returns to former club Crystal Palace on Saturday, where Butterfield is expected to make his debut for the hosts having moved to Selhurst Park on loan this week.
The 22-year-old was Freedman's first signing at the Reebok Stadium in November and made four starts and as many substitute appearances during a two-month stay.
"At the end of the day Jacob wanted to play matches and I just felt that I couldn't guarantee him games, said Freedman.
"He's got a call from Crystal Palace and he told me - he called me on the phone and he asked me. He was promised more games and I can't really run my team that way. I don't promise my players games.
"I promise my players that if they train hard and they commit to the team then they can play. Hence the reason Jacob left."
Speculation continues to swirl around Palace winger Wilfried Zaha and Freedman, who played such a key role in his development, insists the 20-year-old England international is ready to ply his trade at the highest level.
"I believe he's a Premier League player, I believe he can play in a Premier League team right now and also feel it could be a top four or five Premier League team he could go and play for right now," he said.
"He is a big talent. I understand that Palace are up the top right now trying to get promotion, so you need to be able to try and hold on to players like that.
"Wilfried's a good young man with good talents - feet right on the ground he has - so I'm sure it won't affect him."

Genoa sign midfielder Ruben Olivera on loan with view to permanent deal

Genoa have signed Fiorentina midfielder Ruben Olivera on loan with a view to completing a permanent deal at the end of the Serie A season.

The Uruguay international has struggled to dislodge David Pizarroand Alberto Aquilani from the Viola midfield this term, with disciplinary issues also restricting the 29-year-old to just four league appearances.
Olivera was handed a retrospective three-match ban last month for stamping on Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic during a 4-2 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico.
A statement on genoacfc read: "Genoa have completed the loan transfer of midfielder Ruben Olivera from Fiorentina, with the option to sign the player permanently."
Olivera left Danubio to sign for Juventus in 2003 but spent much of his career with the Bianconeri on loan at other clubs, taking in spells with Atletico Madrid, Sampdoria, Penarol and Genoa.
He returned to Penarol following his release by Juve but returned to Italy with Lecce in 2010 before Vincenzo Montella brought him to the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the summer.
The Rossoblu also confirmed the permanent signing of 25-year-old Bosnian winger Enis Nadarevic from Serie B side Varese for an undisclosed fee.

Sven-Goran Eriksson rejects offer to take over as coach at 1860 Munich

Sven-Goran Eriksson has turned down an offer to take over as coach at German second division side 1860 Munich.

The former England boss was linked with the club last November when he attended one of their games at the request of club investor Hasan Ismaik.
Reiner Maurer was sacked as the Lions' coach shortly after Eriksson's visit to fuel speculation that the Swede was going to replace him, only for Alexander Schmidt to be appointed.
However, negotiations with Eriksson continued behind the scenes, but the 64-year-old has confirmed he has rejected the approach.
"A bit of time has passed since my first contact with the club in November and we all know how quick-moving the professional football world is," said Eriksson in a statement.
"Therefore, I would like to ask everybody involved to respect my decision. I wish my friend Hasan Ismaik and 1860 Munich lots of success in the future."
1860's general manager Robert Schafer had flown out to London earlier this week to discuss terms with Eriksson, and he added: "We spoke at length and in depth about the club and the 2. Bundesliga.
"We had also considered how we could integrate the current coaching staff into his new backroom team."
Schmidt remains in charge of the side, who are five points off the lead in the 2. Bundesliga as they chase a return to the top flight for the first time in nine years.

Derby are set to make a move for Nottingham Forest striker Dexter Blackstock

Derby County are set to make an official approach for Nottingham Forest striker Dexter Blackstock after Saturday's game between the two sides.

Derby have just allowed Nathan Tyson - who ironically made the move from Forest in 2011 - to join Millwall, and they are targeting Blackstock as his possible replacement.
Blackstock has been with Forest since 2008 after joining from Queens Park Rangers and his current deal is due to expire this summer.
It was reported that Forest were in talks over a new deal, but now Derby are looking to lure him across the Midlands.

Boss Stuart McCall signed the 23-year-old Huddersfield forward on loan until the end of the season.
Stopper Shaun Hutchinson has recovered from a tight hamstring while defender Steven Saunders is available again after recovering from a knee injury.
St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas will assess the few "niggles" he has in his squad ahead of Sunday's encounter.
Defender Steven Anderson, however, is ruled out again with a knee injury.
Midfielder Jamie Adams will undergo surgery on a back problem which has decimated his season and is unlikely to feature again before the end of the campaign.

The well-travelled 32-year-old has penned a contract until summer 2014 with the Andalusian outfit.
Sporting director Juan Carlos Cordero told club website: "We spent time negotiating with Zaragoza for Aranda. There is a transfer fee of 500,000 euros.

Liverpool defender Danny Wilson has joined Hearts on loan

Hearts have completed the season-long loan signing of Liverpool defender Danny Wilson.

The SPL had just come out of a transfer embargo, and they have moved quickly to bring in Wilson.
Hearts have now confirmed that Wilson had joined on a six-month deal and could play against Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions Celtic on Saturday.
The former Rangers defender has struggled to win a first-team place at Anfield and has spent time on loan at Blackpool and Bristol City since leaving Ibrox in July 2010.
Hearts boss John McGlynn was delighted to seal his signature, telling the club's website: "Danny is a quality player and someone we know a lot about.
"Even at such a young age, he brings a lot of experience and not only will he be a very good addition to our squad, he will be a good influence on the young players we have here.
"He has been playing regularly down south so fitness won't be a problem and hopefully it won't be long before we see him in a Hearts shirt."

FA charge West Ham boss Sam Allardyce over accusing Phil Dowd of bias

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has been hit with an FA misconduct charge after his criticism of referee Phil Dowd in the media.

The Hammers boss was furious with Dowd's performance in the FA Cup defeat at Manchester United, and he accused the official of bias towards the home team.
Dowd pointed to the spot after Jordan Spence was adjudged to have handled a Ryan Giggs cross, but his refusal to award West Ham a penalty when Rafael deflected the ball on to his own arm left Allardyce fuming.
"There's no doubt about the difference between Rafael's handball and Jordan Spence's," he said afterwards. "Spence plays for West Ham and the away team, while Rafael plays for the home side at Old Trafford.
"With Rafael, the ball hits his hand, but no penalty is given. With Jordan Spence, the ball hits his hand and it's a penalty. You see it time and time again at Old Trafford."
Allardyce's outburst has incurred the wrath of the FA disciplinary committee, who issued a statement confirming the Hammers manager had been charged.
The statement read: "The charge is in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 concerning media comments which questioned the integrity of the match referee and/or match officials in general and/or implied that the match referee and/or match officials in general are motivated by bias and/or brought the game into disrepute."
Allardyce has until Wednesday 23 January to respond to the charge.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wants to keep Edinson Cavani

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has spoken of his desire to keep striker Edinson Cavani at the club.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger recently revealed that the Napoli striker is among names on his transfer wish list.
But De Laurentiis says the player, who signed a new five-year deal at Napoli last summer and has a €63million (£52.8m) buy clause, is wanted at his present club.
He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "For Cavani I have already received a €55million (£46.1m) bid, and I said no. I need him, not the money.
"I trust in his professionalism. He knows that here he is 'the number one', while I believe that in other places or in teams he could not identify with the city, the jersey and the fans like here."

EPL: Manchester United out for revenge at Tottenham

Premier League leaders Manchester United will be out for revenge as they look to deny Tottenham a rare double when they travel to White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men, currently seven points clear at the top of the table, suffered a surprise 3-2 league defeat to Spurs at Old Trafford in September.
They will be keen to avoid a repeat of that loss when they make the trip to the capital this weekend, and will be feeling confident having won their last four on the bounce, including a 2-1 victory over fierce rivals Liverpool last weekend.
Andre Villas-Boas' Tottenham are also in strong form as the Portuguese boss gradually continues to get sceptical supporters onside after succeeding Harry Redknapp in the summer, with the North Londoners unbeaten in seven in all competitions.

However, they suffered a blip at former manager Redknapp's relegation battlers QPR last weekend when they were frustrated to goalless draw to end a three-game winning streak.
Despite dropping points at rock-bottom Rangers, Spurs remain firmly in contention for a UEFA Champions League place, sitting fourth and hot on the trail of third-placed Chelsea, who are two points ahead.
United sit 15 points above Spurs ahead of Sunday's clash and seven clear of nearest rivals Manchester City, but know their neighbours have the chance to slash that gap to four when they host Fulham the day before.
Ferguson's men will be eager to keep their advantage in place as they look to build on a strong recent record against Tottenham, disrupted only by Spurs' win earlier this season.
That result ended a run of 22 Premier League games without a win for the North Londoners against United, while the Red Devils have won eight and lost none of their last 11 league matches at White Hart Lane.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini wasn't worried by Pep Guardiola speculation

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini claims he never felt threatened by the recurring speculation linking Pep Guardiola with his job.

As recently as last weekend, news reports were suggesting former Barcelona boss Guardiola was set to take over at the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Such speculation was fuelled partly by the appointment of former Barca executives Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain to senior roles with the Premier League champions.
This week the Spaniard agreed to end his year-long sabbatical from the game to become Bayern Munich manager for next season, but Mancini says he was never worried about being replaced.
"I didn't have any problem for this - I understand the newspapers should write that every manager wants to take this place because it is a good place," said the Italian.
"But I think we work very well here, I have a five-year contract and I think this is possible for five years."
Mancini, 48, who guided City to their first top-flight league title in 44 years last season, is contracted to the club until 2017.
However, he has come under pressure following the club's elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the group stage and patches of inconsistent league form that sees them trail leaders Manchester United by seven points.
